We leave the farmlands behind and enter forest country, with its changing leaves and color—quite a difference.
We go to from Kenora to Thunder Bay, a distance of 438 miles. There are no posted warnings about gas, and for the first time, I run out of gas. John hitches to the next gas station, three miles away, and I lay the bike one way, then the other, to get another few miles out of the tank. I make it another two miles or so, and John comes around a corner with a can.
We get to the outskirts of Thunder Bay. It’s foggy, rainy, and getting dark. We shelter in a roller-skating stadium and a find an unlocked, heated boiler room. The stadium is not in use, so we have a very comfortable night.
