About 50 miles gets me to the border of the republic of El Salvador. It costs me $1 to leave Honduras. It’s a very slow crossing, and if you don’t carry enough money, they won’t let you into El Salvador. As I didn’t, I had to produce my yellow bank receipts for Los Angeles and New York to prove I had money on the other side before they finally let me through.
In the capitol, San Salvador, I have a contact, Donald Drysdale, whose very hospitable parents I met in Buenos Aires. He entertains me for six days, sight-seeing and meeting his friends. It’s here that I experience the best and most spectacular thunderstorm of my journey, with continuous thunder rolling all around the city hills.
I get a visa for Guatemala and do a financial checkup. I have $195. I’ve done 107 days and averaged $3 a day, as planned.
